It should have been an easy hunt.
The dragon the Quin Zaza had pursued was fairly small; its body was only four meters long. Although it possessed a twisting whiplike tail that more than doubled its length, the drakers were easily able to keep clear of that lashing weapon, subduing the animal from a distance with their lances. When they finally hauled its limp carcass aboard, it was quite dead.
…Or so they had thought until it began to thrash in the ropes that secured it, its unbound tail whipping across the deck like a massive club.
At last the dragon was put down for good, but not quite without incident—which is what led Mika to be sitting moodily in the galley afterward, nursing an enormous welt on his face, while Yoshi hastily cooked him a choice portion of the dragon’s meat as a consolation. Although nearly the entire crew was gathered around in concern, Mika’s burning glare was fixed solely upon the ship’s rookie.
“I said I’m sorry!” Takita exclaimed defensively, squirming under her crewmate’s glare. “I tried to warn you… but in all that noise and confusion on deck, can I help it if you thought I yelled ‘duck, Niko’ instead of ‘duck, Mika’?”
As Niko burst out laughing from the other side of the table, Mika let out a growl and dug viciously into the plate of dragon tenderloin au poivre that Yoshi set in front of him.
